STUDY BACKGROUND

While it appears inevitable that nanotechnology will have a broad and fundamental impact on many sectors of the U.S. economy, various technical, marketing and other hurdles need to be overcome before nanotechnology fulfils this promise. These challenges and differences of opinion regarding commercial applications are reflected in the widely diverging estimates of the U.S. and global nanotechnology markets.

Estimates of the global nanotechnology market in 2010 range from about $15.7 billion (the figure used in this report) to $1 trillion. By 2016, the market may be worth more than $2.4 trillion, according to different analysts. These differences reflect not only different analytical methods and assumptions, but also different definitions of the nanotechnology market (e.g., whether to include decades-old technologies such as carbon black rubber reinforces and photographic silver, or whether to base the market value on nanotechnology inputs alone, as opposed to the total value of products that incorporate nanotechnology).

Perhaps as a reflection of the difficulty of quantifying the market for nanotechnologies, some analysts downplay the commercial dimensions of the nanotechnology market and focus instead on the supply side, i.e., the development of new Nanoscale technologies and applications. These analysts have made valuable contributions, raising investors’ awareness of and interest in nanotechnologies.

However, by itself, the work of these analysts does not provide sufficient information in order to guide corporate or individual investment decisions. Investors require additional data, such as the size of specific nanotechnology markets, prices, and competition, as well as potential regulation.

Track 2 - DNA Nanotechnology:

The ability of DNA to self–assemble into a variety of nanostructures and Nano machines is highlighted in a growing number of papers in Nature Nanotechnology. The appeal of DNA to nanoscientists is threefold: first, it is a natural nanoscale material; second, a large number of techniques for studying DNA are already available; and third, its ability to carry information can be exploited in the self–assembly process. DNA is also increasingly being used to organize other nanomaterials, and the related field of RNA nanotechnology is beginning to emerge. All this can be seen in the articles below.

Track 3 - Nanoelectronics and Biomedical Devices:

Nano electronics are so small that several hundred such devices would fit in the period at the end of this sentence. Laboratory versions made of silicon nanowires can detect disease biomarkers and even single virus cells, or record heart cells as they beat. Lieber’s team also has integrated nanoelectronics  into living tissues in three dimensions — creating a “cyborg tissue.” One obstacle to the practical, long-term use of these devices is that they typically fall apart within weeks or days when implanted. In the current study, the researchers set out to make them much more stable.

Track 4 - Nano Pharmaceuticals:

Nanotechnology could be strategically implemented in new developing drug delivery systems that can expand drug markets. Such a plan would be applied to drugs selected for full-scale development based on their safety and efficacy data, but which fail to reach clinical development because of poor bio pharmacological properties. The new drug delivery methods are expected to enable pharmaceutical companies to reformulate existing drugs on the market, thereby extending the lifetime of products and enhancing the performance of drugs by increasing effectiveness, safety and patient adherence, and ultimately reducing healthcare costs.

Track 7 - Nanotoxicity:

Two decades of Nano toxicology research has shown that the interactions between nanomaterials and cells, animals, humans and the environment are remarkably complex. Researchers are still trying to understand in detail how the physical, chemical and other properties of nanomaterial’s influence these interactions, and thus determine the ultimate impact of nanomaterial’s on health and the environment. And as new nanomaterial is developed, and animal testing is reduced, computational methods are becoming increasingly important for prioritizing safety studies. There is also an on-going debate about the regulation of nanomaterials. Nature Nanotechnology has published articles on all these topics and this web focus on Nano toxicology contains links to all of them.

Track 8 - Bio-Nanomaterials and Tissues Engineering:

Scaffold-based tissue engineering approaches have been under investigation for more than 30 years now and many different techniques have been developed in order to engineer various tissues of the body. Some of them have been translated from bench to bedside, yet many are still under intensive examination. Biodegradable scaffolds applied in tissue engineering aim to temporarily substitute for the extracellular matrix and its complex biological functions during the regeneration and/or remodeling period, and are subsequently degraded and replaced by new tissue.

Materials scientists lay stress on understanding how the history of a material influences its structure, and thus its properties and performance. All engineered products from airplanes to musical instruments, alternative energy sources related to ecologically-friendly manufacturing processes, medical devices to artificial tissues, computer chips to data storage devices and many more are made from materials.  In fact, all new and altered materials are often at the heart of product innovation in highly diverse applications. The global market is projected to reach $6,000 million by 2020 and lodge a CAGR of 10.2% between 2015 and 2020 in terms of worth. The North American region remains the largest market, accompanied by Asia-Pacific. The Europe market is estimated to be growth at a steady rate due to economic redeem in the region along with the expanding concern for the building insulation and energy savings.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are allotropes of carbon with a cylindrical nanostructure. These cylindrical carbon molecules have unusual properties, which are valuable for nanotechnology, electronics, optics and other fields of materials science and technology. Owing to the material's exceptional strength and stiffness, nanotubes have been constructed with length-to-diameter ratio of up to 132,000,000:1, significantly larger than for any other material. In addition, owing to their extraordinary thermal conductivity, mechanical, and electrical properties, carbon nanotubes find applications as additives to various structural materials. For instance, nanotubes form a tiny portion of the material(s) in some (primarily carbon fibre) baseball bats, golf clubs, car parts or Damascus steel.

Market Value on Nanotechnology and Medicine Research:-

Nanotechnology involves the study of phenomena and manipulation of matter on a nanometre scale and development of a wide range of tools, objects, structures, devices, systems and techniques of nanotechnologies. This is a fast-growing area of research and development. It is widely predicted that the nanotechnologies will become a central focus for driving economic growth in the 21st century. These fields are attracting rapidly increasing investments from governments and from businesses across the globe. The aim of the current UK Strategy for nanotechnologies is to describe the actions necessary to ensure that the UK obtains maximum economic, environmental and societal benefit from nanotechnologies while keeping the risks properly managed (EPSRC).

Nanotechnology has the ability to solve problems associated to human civilizations, pertaining to both basic needs and aspirations for a comfortable life. Although nanotechnology involves the manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular and supramolecular scale, the specific technological goal is of precisely manipulating atoms and molecules for fabrication of macro scale products, also now referred to as molecular nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is evolving towards becoming a general-purpose technology by 2020, encircling four generations of products with increasing structural and dynamic complexity such as Passive nanostructures, active nanostructures, nano systems, molecular Nano systems.

Recent research study, "Nanotechnology Market Outlook 2017", RNCOS' analysts have identified that the global nanotechnology industry has been growing at a rapid pace with rising applications in sectors like electronic, energy, healthcare sector etc. In addition, market trends like nanotechnology-based thin film solar cells with high efficiency; nanomaterials with higher strength; robust growth in nanofibers and nanomedicine market; etc., are booming growth in this industry.
